How to connect a controller to Monster Hunter Outlanders
- Pair it with your phone first. Connect the controller in your iPhone, iPad or Android Bluetooth settings, or plug it in with a USB-C cable. If the phone does not see the controller, the game will not either.
- Open the game with the controller already connected. Start a hunt or walk around the field to check that movement and attacks respond.
- Check the layout in Settings → Controller. One guide reports the bindings are split into Combat, Interact with Environment and System tabs, that each button can be reassigned, and that Reset All restores the defaults.
- Keep touch as a backup. Recruitment, the shop, crafting and other menus still need taps at launch.
Which controllers work with Monster Hunter Outlanders?
The developer has not published a list of supported controllers. The official answer is only “Controller Support: Yes”, so we cannot promise a specific model. In general, controllers your phone itself supports are the ones to try: on iPhone and iPad that means controllers Apple lists as compatible, and on Android standard Bluetooth or USB-C gamepads. If yours is detected by the phone but not by Monster Hunter Outlanders, try reconnecting it before launching the game, and update both the game and your phone software.
Is Monster Hunter Outlanders full controller support coming?
Yes, according to the producer. In an interview before launch, TiMi Studio Group producer Don Huang said that, under Capcom's licence, the team will provide full controller support in future updates. No date has been given. When an update adds controller support for menus or other screens, we will note it here and on the Monster Hunter Outlanders beginner guide.
Monster Hunter Outlanders controller vs touch controls
Touch has two layouts. Adventure Mode groups actions into a few large buttons for players new to Monster Hunter; the standard layout gives each skill its own button. A controller mostly helps with camera control and dodging during long hunts, which is where touch players struggle most. If you are on a small phone, a controller also frees the screen so you can see the monster's weak part, which matters on the hunts in the Monster Hunter Outlanders weakness chart.
The game is demanding either way. The official recommended devices are iOS 17+, iPhone 13 Pro or newer, 6 GB RAM and Android 12+, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or Dimensity 9200 or better, 8 GB RAM. Bluetooth adds a little input delay on some phones; a cable connection avoids it.
Controller not working? Quick fixes
- Not detected: unpair and pair the controller again in phone settings, then restart the game with it connected.
- Buttons feel wrong: open Settings → Controller and use Reset All, then change one button at a time.
- Stuck in a menu: that screen is touch-only at launch. Tap through it and pick the controller back up in the field.
- Lag: charge the controller, move closer to the phone, or switch to a USB-C cable.
